London CNN —Shares in Meta plunged in premarket trading Thursday as the Facebook owner’s plans to “invest aggressively” in artificial intelligence spooked investors. The company is competing head-to-head with Microsoft and Google to unlock the enormous potential of AI. Meta (META), which also owns WhatsApp and Instagram, said Wednesday that first-quarter profit more than doubled year-on-year, while revenue was up 27%. Meta said full-year capital expenditure would be in the range of $35-40 billion — up from previous guidance of $30-37 billion — as it continues to accelerate infrastructure investments to support AI. Meta has forecast revenue of $36.5-39 billion, versus analyst expectations of $38.2 billion.

Still, in an earlier case involving a different provision of the law, the Supreme Court said it should be tethered to its original purpose. Mr. Fischer is accused of entering the Capitol around 3:24 p.m. on Jan. 6, 2021, with the counting of electoral ballots having been suspended after the initial assault. But the question for the justices is legal, not factual: Does the 2002 law cover what Mr. Fischer is accused of? Indeed, the judges in the majority in an appeals court ruling against Mr. Fischer could not agree on just what the word meant. By a 5-to-4 vote, the Supreme Court agreed.

Three years ago this month, Vice President Kamala Harris moved into her official residence in northwest Washington, a quiet 73-acre enclave where the U.S. Navy keeps an observatory as well as the nation’s master clock. Near the villa, the team had found something else: A brick foundation of a smokehouse used to cure meat. Ms. Harris did not have to be told who had used it. Well before moving to the new residence, the nation’s first Black vice president had been told by aides about the 34 individuals who once lived on the property against their will. A subsequent opinion essay for CQ Roll Call was the first mention of it in the news media.

London CNN —The global price of oil rose Tuesday to its highest level in seven months, propelled, in part, by concerns that mounting tensions in the Middle East could crimp supply. Brent crude, the world’s oil benchmark, climbed as much as 1.8% to $89 a barrel, the highest since early September, before paring those gains slightly mid-afternoon in Europe. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate crude, the US benchmark, also rose 1.8% to reach a five-month high of $85 a barrel. “You’ve got ongoing Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries… Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea,” as well as a “general sense that the Middle East is less stable than it was a year ago,” he told CNN. ROME (AP) — For nearly six decades, the Tirelli atelier in Rome has woven itself into the fabric of Italian and international film history, earning the nickname the “Oscar tailor’s shop” for its contribution to cinematic costume design. Power demand from generative AI will soar from 46 terawatt hours to 224 TWH between this year and 2027, according to the firm's base case scenario. That's equivalent to more than 75% of the total global data center power use in 2022, or close to Spain's entire power consumption in 2022, the firm said. "We believe the rapid power demand growth from GenAI is not well understood, and not priced into a number of stocks." Among large-scale renewable developers in the U.S., AES has the largest commercial and industrial market share, according to Morgan Stanley. Apart from data center infrastructure and power providers, utilities are another part of the data center servicing ecosystem.

The French bank also did not comment on plans to end its research partnership with Morningstar after more than four years. The expansion of the equities business by BNP comes as its Wall Street peers have reduced investment banking headcount this year amid sluggish trading and dealmaking activities. In Asia, BNP competes with large Western banks including Morgan Stanley (MS.N), Goldman Sachs (GS.N), JPMorgan (JPM.N) and UBS (UBSG.S), as well as a host of local investment banks in the cash equities business. The South American country nationalized 51% of the oil company more than a decade ago from Spain's Repsol (REP.MC). YPF is Argentina's largest oil firm and oversees development of Vaca Muerta, the world's second-largest shale gas reserve and fourth-largest shale oil reserve. Shares of YPF jumped more than 40% early in the session, before paring some gains to trade up 35.2%. Global X analyst Trevor Yates said the YPF gains were related to the increasing likelihood of it being privatized and implementing an international price parity policy.
